Sprains
Treatment for Sprained Ankle, Wrist, Knee, Elbow & Shoulders
Throughout your body, ligaments are susceptible to damage caused by excessive pressure or force. Have you ever rolled your ankle because you stepped in a hole or didn’t see an upcoming curb? That sudden, unexpected motion can damage the tissue that holds your ankle joint together. Other sites of sprains include the knee, shoulder, elbow, and wrist.
At the Joint Replacement Institute, our orthopedic doctors are usually able to diagnose a sprain just by examining the location of pain. In some cases, they may order an X-ray or MRI to rule out a fracture or other soft tissue injury.
Types of Sprains
Your doctor will grade your sprain according to its severity:
- A grade 1 sprain is mild. The ligament is stretched but not torn.
- A grade 2 sprain is moderate. It involves a partial tear of the ligament.
- A grade 3 sprain is severe. It involves a complete rupture of the ligament. In some cases, a piece of bone may also have been torn off
Symptoms of a sprain may include swelling, bruising, pain, and joint stiffness.
Mild and moderate sprains can typically be treated conservatively with rest, ice, anti-inflammatory pain medication, and physical therapy. Severe sprains require immobilization and possibly surgery, followed by physical therapy. If surgery is needed, our doctors may be able to perform minimally invasive procedures to repair torn ligaments.
