Partial Knee Replacement | Naples, Florida
Dr. Kurtis Biggs is an expert in a variety of orthopedic knee pain treatments, including custom fit knee replacements and partial knee replacement surgery. While afflictions of the knee joint tend to encompass the entire knee, oftentimes only part of the knee is affected. By targeting the damaged area, Dr. Biggs is able to work around the remaining healthy areas of the knee, minimizing the impact of the surgery and helping the patient's body work with the prosthetic implant.
Partial Knee Resurfacing: An Improvement to Total Knee Joint Surgery
The knee is made up of three compartments - the medial (inside), lateral, (outside), and patellofemoral (kneecap). Each individual compartment can be damaged by osteoarthritis, leaving the other two compartments relatively unscathed and still functional. In this situation, a
partial knee resurfacing procedure may be the best orthopedic option for the patient.
Benefits of Partial Knee Resurfacing
Benefits of Stryker's partial knee resurfacing prosthetics include:
- Advanced bearing (X3) technology affords for reduced wear
- Smaller incision
- Quicker recovery time
Osteoarthritis Treatment Utilizing Partial Knee Resurfacing
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis to affect the knee joint and is also known as "wear and tear" arthritis. Osteoarthritis of the knee affects the joint's cartilage, its main shock absorbing and cushioning material. When osteoarthritis deteriorates the knee's cartilage, the bones of the upper leg can come into direct contact with the bones of the lower leg, causing pain and leading to a destabilization of the knee joint. Arthroscopy and other minimally invasive surgical techniques can provide low-impact surgical solutions for this debilitating musculoskeletal condition.
Knee Resurfacing Surgery: Stryker Orthopaedic Implants
Dr. Biggs uses two types of specially designed implants during partial knee replacement surgery - the
Triathlon Partial Knee Resurfacing and
Oxford Partial Knee implants. The Triathlon implant is designed for either side of the knee, while the Oxford implant is tailored specifically for the medial side of the knee joint, allowing for a much smaller implant compared to a traditional full joint implant.
The smaller, tailored implants decrease the overall area that needs to be resurfaced, allowing the still healthy portions of the knee joint to more easily incorporate the new implants. This process allows for less recovery time, a stronger bond between the implants and the remaining portions of the natural knee joint and a longer life for the implant.
